The thing that Willow noticed about Brazil that was different from her experiences in Sunnydale was the way that the dead acted. Vampires from America just had no respect for the living; even Spike and Angelus had only seen humans as a food source, and perhaps a form of entertainment. But the vampires in Brazil seemed to have a respect for the living; perhaps it had something to do with Brazilian culture, whatever it was Willow wasn’t too sure. All she knew was that Brazilian vampires were different than those she had encountered before. They were still into killing and torturing, but most seemed to leave their former homes rather than staying around. Willow sometimes thought that it might have something to do with the fact that there was no Hellmouth in Brazil, so the vampires in Brazil were very different than the ones in Sunnydale.
It was Willow’s belief that the vampires in Brazil were very different that caused both Willow and Kennedy to become over confident. The couple was in Brazil to find the new Slayers that Willow’s spell had created. They had been sent to Brazil, the same way that Xander had been sent to Africa, Buffy had taken a map of the world, pinned it to the wall, and had thrown darts on it to see where her friends would go. Not the most logical, rational or even scientific way of sending them out, but Buffy was never the most logical, rational or scientific of Slayers. Willow and Kennedy loved Brazil and they had no problems being there, during the day they would seek out Slayers and at night they would slay vampires. For Willow, things weren’t overly different than the way they had been in Sunnydale. But things had drastically changed for Kennedy.
No one really thought about how the Potentials becoming Slayers would affect their lives, especially the ones who knew they were Potentials, and even more so for those who had been involved in the final battle in Sunnydale. Most Slayers in the long line of Slayers did not experience even half of what Buffy Summers had experiences in seven years on the Hellmouth. Nor did most Slayers even live as long as she did, the lives of Slayers was often short and brutal, even for the ones who led boring lives and only ever fought vampires and never encountered demons or vampires like Angelus, Spike, Darla, and Drusilla. But no one had thought that fighting the battle that would close the Sunnydale Hellmouth would actually have a dire affect on the former Potentials. Kennedy was a prime example of this, not only had she survived the battle without any really wounds, but she had gone to Brazil with Willow, who was the most powerful witch and highly experienced in fighting demons of all varieties. So Kennedy’s high confidence, combined with Willow’s beliefs that the vampires in Brazil were somehow different and the other two factors, would result in a horrible occurrence.
Willow and Kennedy were patrolling a cemetery by themselves for they had sent the most recent Slayers they had found to Giles in England. All of a sudden, a gang of eight vampires attacked them, and neither had the years of intense training that Buffy had so they were seriously outnumbered. However, Willow did have a slight advantage over the vampires: her magick. When the lead vampire pulled out a knife and advanced on Kennedy, Willow quickly cast a spell. Just as the spell went off, the vampire managed to stab Kennedy. Willow’s spell destroyed the vampires, and the redhead rushed her girlfriend to the nearest hospital. However, even with Slayer healing, the wound was very serious for the vampire had managed to stab Kennedy in the stomach. For the next few weeks it would be touch and go as to whether Kennedy would actually survive the stabbing, it would result in Giles reviewing the placement of the surviving Potentials from Sunnydale.
