She hadn't seen it coming at all. Just going about her
normal patrol, listening for vampires, debating if she could
convince her mom to get her those sweet boots that she'd seen at the
mall… and then, pain.

It just radiated out, making her feel the pain over far
more of her than had actually been injured, and then it was
throbbing, misery. As the blood welled up, a beacon to the dangers
of the night, Buffy refused to cry. Even from this betrayal of her
own weapon.

Wincing, Buffy pulled the splinter from her hand. "That's
just not fair."
