Wesley had calmly listened to Angel when the brooding, ensouled vampire had chastised him for stabbing Gunn for his involvement in Fred’s death. He had even calmly listened when Angel had told him that Angel and Spike had passed up a cure for Fred. Wesley had acted like he cared that Angel had decided to not cure Fred because there was a potential of thousands dying. And at first, Wesley had cared that to cure Fred would have caused thousands of innocents to become infected with Illyria’s essence. But as the days slowly turned into weeks, he just stopped caring. Every time, he saw Illyria in Fred’s body a little piece of him died, especially when Illyria started to appear more and more human and less demonic. He was afraid that the next time he saw her; Illyria would look exactly like his beloved Fred. He had no comfort in the knowledge that their souls would eventually be reunited when he died, after all Fred’s soul had been destroyed by Illyria’s rebirth into her current shell. The more he had thought about it, the less he could see the logic in Angel’s decision. He knew that Spike had no real involvement in the decision, although the blonde vampire had stayed on with Wolfram and Hart, it had become clear to everyone that if Spike were to say that the sky was blue, Angel would argue against it. Wesley knew that he was slowly losing his grasp on sanity, but he really didn’t care. All he cared about was that Angel had given up the chance to save Fred. Finally, Wesley waited one night when he knew that Angel would be the only one left at Wolfram and Hart, and he snuck into Angel’s office. The vampire was completely engrossed in a phone conversation with Buffy, something that only increased Wesley’s anger. Angel could talk to his soul mate whenever he wanted, and Wesley had nothing, Fred was gone and all that was left was a demon with her memories. Angel had turned his back so that he was facing his wall with the weapons and pieces of art on it, giving Wesley the perfect opportunity to sneak up on the vampire. Wesley crept up to Angel’s desk and disconnected the phone. Angel said “hello, hello” a few times before he turned around to face his desk again, and before he could say anything, Wesley drove the stake into Angel’s undead heart and watched as the vampire exploded into dust. It was all that mattered to him; Fred’s death had been avenged.

It was Lorne who found him by the desk, staring blankly at the dust that was in Angel’s chair. And it was Lorne who figured out what had happened. No one knew if Wesley should be punished or if he should be institutionalized. It was Buffy who finally decided that Wesley shouldn’t be punished and that it was his friends who should care for him. She had always known that nothing good would come out of Angel’s decision to work at Wolfram and Hart and that they would finally find a way to kill him. After all it wasn’t Wesley that had really been to blame, it was Wolfram and Hart that had corrupted them all.
